Want More College Scholarships? 3 Expert Tips Every Student Should Know!

  1. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, YOU GOT THIS! Before you start dialing up the college staff like they're your personal hotline, dive deep into that college website of yours. Trust me, it's packed with info! Sure, the folks at your college are there to help, but they also appreciate a good detective. Your institution is equipped with incredible people who are ready to assist you in your journey to start college.

Tip #1 : Do Your OWN Research!
Tip #1 : Do Your OWN Research!

While college decision-makers value a good networker, they might be skeptical if you ask them something that's already plastered all over their website. Most colleges highlight their scholarship and award info right on their Admissions, Financial Aid, or academic department webpages. So, channel your inner explorer before you ask someone else to play tour guide. Nothing says "I'm ready for college" like being able to find answers to the easy stuff on your own. Plus, widgets, college-supported chatbots, and easy search fields are often provided on the website to make navigation easier.

Tip #2 : Say goodbye to high school email addresses
Tip #2 : Say goodbye to high school email addresses

  2. Say goodbye to your high school email address as your scholarship point of contact! Most high school email accounts have firewalls that can limit or restrict external communications from your college, department, or other scholarship organizations. Instead, create a professional personal email account you can check regularly and use for all your scholarship communications until you receive a .edu email address. One of the biggest mistakes I've seen students make is not checking their email and overlooking a scholarship opportunity, an important deadline to accept a scholarship offer, or scheduling a scholarship interview.  Trust me, missing an email about a scholarship is like missing out on a free coffee day at Starbucks—heartbreaking! These missed golden opportunities result in students losing out on full-ride scholarships that could pay for everything.  Don’t let stubborn firewalls or poor communication skills stand between you and your chances for scholarship monies.

Tip #3: Avoid using the same essay twice!
Tip #3: Avoid using the same essay twice!

  3. Avoid using the same essay twice (or depend 100% on Chat GPT) to convey your intent. Oftentimes a small group of individuals are scholarship readers for college, department, or academic program scholarships, therefore, they can easily recall the same or similar stories.  If you have relied solely on Chat GPT to convey your commitment to the University of ABC, based on their “top rankings” or history of Rhode Scholars; you are probably one of many stating the same claim.  Be transparent about your financial circumstances, convey your originality, and how your story resonates with the donors or department awarding the scholarship.  Your essay should be genuine to you while addressing your passions, academic goals, and how you plan to excel in the world as a recipient of Donor A, B, or C’s financial commitment to you.  Tell your own story and scholarship readers will remember you for all the right reasons throughout your academic journey!
